The Toulmin Method
In the current age of online communication, the Toulmin method provides a set construction for arguments/presentation of a claim. This method breaks down the argument into components that can be identified and are easier to analyze for readers while still presenting an effective point.
A claim is simply the statement that is being proven or disproven. Having a claim in discussions can help make your point clear, so others don't misconstrued words. Data is the evidence that is provided to support the claim. Having data gives credibility to the argument which is important for online communication, where anyone can post anything they want and have it be passed off as true. A warrant connects the claim and the data, essentially explaining how the data affects the claim, and backing is additional explanation that adds to the warrant. Including this in communication helps explain the connections between the data and the point. Qualifiers are phrases that imply that your point is not right every single time, or that is it not always true in certain circumstances. Having qualifiers shows that the writer knows that their point can be disproven and has exceptions, but can still be true. Finally, a rebuttal is the inclusion of other points that go against the writers point. This also helps build credibility as it shows the author knows the point is not always right and paints a more unbiased picture.
In online arguments such as political debates for example, Toulmin can be used to clarify points and give them credibility. In many instances political debates online can become agitated and motivated by feelings more than facts. Using the Toulmin method will allow conversations to be more clear, constructive, and can provide actual verifiable facts. Scientific discussion online can benefit from this method as they require support for their claims and also need to acknowledge counterpoints, as there are many in scientific spaces.
A challenge when using the Toulman method online is that more structured and complex writing online can cause some to lose interest in the information, or become intimidated by the content. Online communication is becoming progressively shorter and easier to digest. This makes information more attractive for readers as they only have to give their attention fro short periods of time. In order to navigate this issue writers could use more common language in their post to make their information less intimidating. Also they could try and simplify their points while still making them complete and effective as to not poor audiences.
Critical thinking skills and information literacy are important in the Toulmin method as the method requires readers to be able to identify the different components of the method and be able to digest the information. However, writing can be put into simple format while still following the method and effectively conveying information in order to aid with those who might struggle with information literacy online.
